Crash Site |
In the book Miracle In the Andes, by Nando Parrado, he tells
his story of being trapped in the Andes due to a plain crash, and for those of
you that don’t know, the Andes are the tallest mountain range in the western
hemisphere and 2
nd in the world to only Mt. Everest. On that plain
were his young teammates of the Old Christians rugby team, family of the
teammates, and a few passengers. Many died in the very harsh impact, and they
could be considered the lucky ones. The survivors were stranded at approximately
12,000 feet, with very deep snow, and had to live off of bare minimum for a
human to go on. For example they ate a square of chocolate a day and ate snow
to stay hydrated; but when the candy ran out all they were stuck with were
human bodies. Yes, they turned to cannibalism; we may criticize them for doing
it, but hey I’d do the same thing if I were put in this situation. Due to
respect all loved ones were left untouched like Nando’s mother who had died on
impact, and his sister who couldn’t survive the conditions. Eventually the
bodies were running out and they needed a way out. 3 groups of people had tried
to find a way out but the first two times they had failed. Nando was not letting
that happen though, he had way too much to lose in his mind. Somehow through
his drive to return to his sister Graciela and his father he made it out with
his close friend Roberto, who was also on the Old Christians with him, through
the Andes. This story was just truly incredible and I advise every single
person to read it.
"'That's Argentina,' Garcia said. 'The High Andes. That's more than seventy miles from here.' ' We have to hurry,' I said. 'Our friends are dying.' Massa frowned at Garcia. 'He's confused,' he said. 'They couldn't have crossed the Andes on foot! Impossible!'" (227)
1.) I could not survive this situation alone, However, if I entered this situation with a large group of strong and capable individuals I may be able to surive.
